According to government profile Banyuwangi and refer existing historical data, throughout history Blambangan presumably dated December 18, 1771 is the oldest historical events that should be appointed as the anniversary of Banyuwangi. Before the events of the height of the Bayu Puputan there are actually other events that preceded it, which also heroic-patriotic, that the attack on the fighters under the leadership of Prince Blambangan Puger (son of Wong Agung Wilis) to the VOC fort Banyualit in 1768.
Unfortunately these events are not recorded in full pertanggalannya, and besides the impression that we lost in the attacks total, while the enemy suffered hardly any losses. On this occasion the Prince Puger fall, while Wong Agung Wilis, after Lateng destroyed, injured, arrested and then exiled to the island of Banda (Lekkerkerker, 1923).
Based on historical data Banyuwangi name can not be released by keajayaan Blambangan. Since the time of Prince Tawang Alun (1655-1691) and Prince Danuningrat (1736-1763), even up when Blambangan under the protection of Bali (1763-1767), the VOC had never been attracted to enter and manage Blambangan (Ibid.1923: 1045 ).
In 1743, Eastern Java (including Blambangan) submitted by Pakubuwono II to the VOC, VOC feel Blambangan already be his. But for the time being still left as a deposit item, which will be run at any time, when it is needed. Even when Danuningrat memina VOC assistance to escape from Bali, the VOC was not interested in looking into Blambangan (Ibid 1923:1046).
But then after the British established trade relations with Blambangan and set up trade offices (complex Inggrisan now) in the year 1766 in the small port of Banyuwangi (which at the time was also called Tirtaganda, Tirtaarum or Toyaarum), the VOC immediately move to immediately seize and secure the entire Banyuwangi Blambangan. Generally in peprangan that occurred in 1767-1772 (5 years), the VOC was trying to capture the entire Blambangan. But specifically the actual VOC compelled to immediately seize Banyuwangi, which at that time had begun to develop a center of trade in Blambangan, who have mastered English.
It is obvious, that the birth of a place yag later became famous by the name of Banyuwangi, has become a case of buying and devastating wars, war Puputan Bayu. Had it not entrenched in Banyuwangi England in the year 1766, probably VOC will not rush into Blambangan expansion plans in 1767. And since it's probably Puputan Bayu war will not happen (peak) on December 18, 1771. Thus there must be a close relationship Bayu Puputan war with the birth of a place called Banyuwangi. In other words, the war Puputan Bayu is part of the process of the birth of Banyuwangi. Therefore, the determination dated December 18, 1771 as the anniversary of Banyuwangi actually quite rational.
